RAIR analyzed CSA data (cut-off date of May 26, 2011) for nearly 70,000 motor carriers to determine whether type of cargo hauled affects BASICs scores. Here are some of the results:
Unsafe Driving BASIC
13% of CSA violations occur in the Unsafe Driving BASIC for carriers of livestock, the highest percentage of all cargo types. Oil field carriers have the lowest percentage (7%).
Fatigued Driving BASIC
21% of CSA violations occur in the Fatigued Driving BASIC for companies carrying perishable cargo (livestock, meat, fresh produce, cold food). This compares to 16% for companies carrying all other types of cargo.
Driver Fitness BASIC
On average, 2% of all CSA violations occur in the Driver Fitness BASIC. This BASIC had the least variation across cargo types.
D&A BASIC
Less than 1% of all CSA violations occur in the substance abuse BASIC, the lowest of all BASICs.
Vehicle Maintenance BASIC
70% of CSA violations for garbage haulers occur in the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC, more than any other cargo type.
Cargo BASIC
6% of all CSA violations occur in the Cargo BASIC for oil field carriers. This compares to an average of 3% for carriers of all cargo type.
Crash BASIC
Carriers of mobile homes had the lowest percentage of CSA violations occurring in the Crash BASIC.
