BASICs by Cargo Type

RAIR analyzed CSA data (cut-off date of May 26, 2011) for nearly 70,000 motor carriers to determine whether type of cargo hauled affects BASICs scores.  Here are some of the results:

Unsafe Driving BASIC

13% of CSA violations occur in the Unsafe Driving BASIC for carriers of livestock, the highest percentage of all cargo types.  Oil field carriers have the lowest percentage (7%).

Fatigued Driving BASIC

Driver Fitness BASIC

D&A BASIC

Less than 1% of all CSA violations occur in the substance abuse BASIC, the lowest of all BASICs.

Vehicle Maintenance BASIC

70% of CSA violations for garbage haulers occur in the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC, more than any other cargo type.

Cargo BASIC

6% of all CSA violations occur in the Cargo BASIC for oil field carriers.  This compares to an average of 3% for carriers of all cargo type.

Crash BASIC

Carriers of mobile homes had the lowest percentage of CSA violations occurring in the Crash BASIC.
